Episode 50 - Courage is Contagious with Debbie Millman
If you know the name Debbie Millman you are probably familiar with one of the first and oldest podcasts “Design Matters” or maybe you know the six books she’s authored, or know her as one of the designing and branding minds behind well known brand campaigns, like Hersey’s, Pepsi, Tropicana, and Starwars Episode II...and that’s just to name a few. If you don’t know Debbie Millman, you like me were missing out on a brilliant mind, a thought leader, a creative genius and a woman who is committed to using her talents to create change in the world.
Her popular podcast “Design Matters” has been downloaded over 5 million times and is approaching its 14th anniversary! Debbie has had world renown guests like Simon Sinek, Brene Brown, Seth Godin, Malcolm Gladwell and Tim Ferris on her podcast. Something I admire about Debbie is her commitment to work that changes lives and impacts our society as a whole, seen in her service to The Joyful Heart Foundation of which she serves as Chairman of the Board. Joyful Heart was founded in 2004 by Mariska Hargitay, to help sexual assault survivors heal and reclaim a sense of joy in their lives. Today, Joyful Heart is a leading national organization with a mission to transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, survivors’ healing, and to end this violence forever.
Debbie and I discuss:
- Her accomplishments, and challenges in growing one of the first podcasts;
- Her history with Sterling Brands and the over 200+ logos and branding campaigns she and her team developed;
- Giving up, failure and pushing yourself “beyond” to achieve success;
- Movements like #MeToo and the challenges behind creating branding for memorable social justice movements;
- Courage over confidence; Why confidence is overrated and how to develop both courage and confidence;
- The differences between branding products or causes and branding people.
